Action games are all about speed, focus, and keeping players hooked. According to our top games data, Action games have an average play time of around 13 minutes and a Day 1 retention of 8.1% (which is 21% above the platform average of 6.7%). Shooting games average 12 minutes and 6.5% retention.
1. High-Volume Rewarded Ads
Because action games can get intense, players are usually happy to watch a rewarded ad to save their progress, get a temporary power-up, or keep playing after they die.
Revives
When a player dies, you can offer them a quick revive to continue from where they left off. Make sure to limit this to once per session instead of offering it every time they die to comply with platform frequency cap requirements.
- Add a countdown: A 5-second countdown timer on the revive button adds excitement and encourages players to jump back in.
- Give temporary invincibility: Always spawn the player with 2–3 seconds of invincibility (with a flashing effect). If they spawn right back into danger and die immediately, they will get frustrated.

Pre-Round Trials
Before a level starts, let players try out a premium locked weapon or character for just one run in exchange for watching an ad. This lets players experience your cool endgame content early, keeping them playing longer and encouraging them to unlock those items for real.
Loot Multipliers
At the end of a match or level, offer an ad to double or triple the currency or items they just earned. Since players have already put in the work to get the loot, they'll want to get the most out of it.
2. Midgame Ads
Action games are fast. Interrupting a player in the middle of combat will frustrate them and make them uninstall your game. Keep ads out of active gameplay.

Learnings from other genres
Why not try something a bit different? Here are some "left-field" ideas inspired by other game genres. While these aren't proven practices for this genre yet, they might be just what your game needs to stand out:
- Idle & Clicker - Offline Material Gathering: Let players passively generate upgrading materials (like weapon parts or scrap) while offline, with a rewarded ad option to double their offline haul when they log back in.
- Puzzle - Boss Skips: If a boss fight or platforming level is too punishing, try offering a rewarded ad to skip it or grant a temporary health/shield buff.
- Driving & RPG - Garage Banners: Let players spend time customizing their weapons, gear, or outfits in a detailed menu. This is a perfect placement for menu banner ads that earn passive revenue while players aren't actively in combat.
